Navy Exposure Sites
Within the US military, naval shipyards were one of the most common sites for asbestos exposure. Shipyards serviced hundreds of Naval and commercial vessels that utilized construction materials and machinery parts containing asbestos. Sailors and civilian's alike endured hazardous conditions while repairing and maintaining the vessels used to protect our country.
Predominantly used in the years between 1940 and 1972, asbestos was a widely used insulate because of its resistance to fire and its ability to protect against heat. Although the harmful effects of these asbestos-based products were unbeknownst to the military, the products were used in the construction and maintenance of hundreds of battleships, cruisers, destroyers, aircraft carriers and submarines.
Although there was risk involved in the initial construction of the vessels, the most widespread asbestos-exposure danger lay with the operation and maintenance of the Navy vessels. During routine operations, maintenance and repairs, servicemen were exposed to asbestos fibers and rarely wore preventative equipment to prevent inhalation or ingestion of asbestos, as they were not warned to do so! When asbestos-containing materials were torn out and replaced, the work released the asbestos fibers into the air, potentially exposing all in vicinity of the work. Workers who regularly performed repairs and maintenance work in boiler rooms, machinery spaces, bilges, engine rooms and the like, or who took on the roles of welding, painting or working parties in the machinery spaces, were often directly subjected to substantial asbestos exposure.
The shipyard and naval population has been largely affected by pleural mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. Although the precise number of veterans affected by asbestos aboard ship and in shipyards remains unidentified, the opportunity for many to develop cancers of the lung or respiratory areas in the upcoming years will certainly rise.
It is important to seek the advice of a medical professional if you have been exposed to asbestos, as mesothelioma's long latency causes symptoms to sometimes not occur for upwards of 40 years after initial exposure.
