What Is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is an extremely rare form of cancer. Almost universally recognized as being caused by asbestos exposure, mesothelioma is a cancerous tumor which affects the mesothelial cells of an organ, usually in the lungs, abdomen or heart. When infected, the abnormal cells of the mesothelium divide and invade the nearby tissues and organs. In some cases, the cancer cells can spread from their origin and affect other parts of the body.
Although there is an average of 3,000 mesothelioma cases being reported each year, the disease still remains uncommon and often untreatable. With a higher frequency occurring in men than in women, risk increases with age, but can appear in individuals at any age.
